L'aileron est puissant dès l’accélération, à tel point que nous avons pu réduire la longueur de l’aileron de 3 à 5 cm par rapport aux tailles normalement utilisées.
Quelques exemples :
During comparative measurements of an "exceptional" mast, as assessed by Anders Bringdal, in parallel with more common masts, we observed that the exceptional mast had the greatest strength while also having the greatest ability to deform... These observations were the trigger for this project on which we started working in 2020. Everything is based on analyzing the consequences of the flexibility and strength of a fin.
In a traditional construction, softening a fin involves removing or repositioning carbon layers to achieve this flexibility. In practice, the effect is immediate: the board rises above the water and glides better at all speeds, but there is a downside: steering at off-wind angles becomes more challenging. As long as we are sailing upwind with constant support, it remains enjoyable.
However, as we reach a beam reach and broad reach, things become more complex. This is when the board accelerates and the support becomes increasingly inconsistent. All the support relies on a deforming and energy-absorbing structure, and that's when it becomes complicated. Maintaining a good trim and staying on course requires undeniable piloting skills, yet a good amount of uncertainty persists...
To address this recurring problem, we created the DUAL. Due to its innovative and unprecedented shape and structure, this fin has the capacity to deform significantly to generate maximum lift while also possessing the ability to return to its original position, providing a crisp and firm return impulse to eliminate the blurred effects often felt at off-wind angles.
Furthermore, we equipped the DUAL with the profile that offers the highest efficiency, that of the CHR X. In terms of the outline, it is heavily inspired by the CHR M for its smooth characteristics, with a slight increase in surface area at the lower part of the fin to enhance lift and the fin's performance in dynamic conditions.
After over a year of various tests and comparisons on the water with very different windsurfers, it has been found that:
- It is possible to equip boards ranging from 70 liters to 140 liters.
- The support is solid, and due to its flexibility, it does not produce violent returns and dampens choppy conditions. The boards ride high on the water, significantly reducing drag.
- Excellent performance at close-hauled angles. The fin provides strong lift, keeping the board well above the chop.
- Very enjoyable for maneuvering and jibes. The rearward-shifted outline facilitates maneuvers and changes of direction.
- Control at off-wind angles is considerably improved. It becomes much easier to control the board's trim. The strength of the fin provides solid support and instantaneous returns.
- The DUAL is consistent underfoot and provides support right from the start.
The fin is powerful from the acceleration, to the extent that we were able to reduce the fin length by 3 to 5 cm compared to the normally used sizes.
Here are a few examples:
Sail 6.3m² - board 90 liters - DUAL 26 and 28 cm
Sail 7.8m² - board 125 liters - DUAL 32 and 34 cm
Sail 8.6m² - board 140 liters - DUAL 40 cm
On the box, for informational purposes, we have indicated the actual size of the fin, and next to it, we have added a virtual size that is 5 cm longer.
Reducing the length of the fin has the effect of decreasing the wetted surface, thus minimizing friction and reducing drag. Better performance is the key. However, this is not without consequences. It is evident that by reducing the surface area, the start will be more delicate than with a larger fin. But as soon as your foot is in the front foot strap, everything falls into place, and you can settle into an engaged position.
Nevertheless, this option is aimed at the most experienced windsurfers. If your sailing style is more aggressive, it's better to stick with the full size. However, if you're seeking speed and are willing to pump a bit more during the start, you can reduce the size of your fin and sail very short. This will allow you to decrease drag, possibly shatter your speed record, and all with the most fun fin you have ever sailed with.
The DUAL will bring joy to Speed Challenge enthusiasts and long-distance racing aficionados.
